When to Start Your Child With Professional Voice Lessons

With television shows such as Glee, American Idol, and The Voice rising in popularity, it’s no wonder why so many children would like to begin voice lessons. While a child’s voice may take years to develop, their love of music often develops early on.

When deciding to enroll your child in professional voice lessons many parents ponder over the best age to start. It’s never too early to start establishing proper vocal technique, as this will prevent the child from developing bad habits that could takes years to correct in adulthood.  While there’s no “perfect” age to enroll your child in voice lessons, here are some questions to ask yourself to be sure your child is ready physically, mentally and emotionally.

• Will the lessons be in the best interest of my child?

• How much time does my child spend singing?

• Has my child voiced their opinion on taking a voice lesson?

• Does my child have the patience for focusing during a voice lesson?

• Will my child be able to dedicate 20-30 minutes a day to practicing voice techniques?

• Will the voice lesson be a fun, enriching environment where my child can benefit?
At Sing Like A Star, we approach singing as a gift where students are encouraged to express themselves through their voices. Fun, patience, and a wealth of knowledge are what each student can expect with each voice lesson. Our children’s voice lessons are available in the studio or online with Tricia Grey, MM or an Associate Teacher.
