Singers – do you strain to reach high notes? This means you are in the “Unbalanced Pulled Lower” category. You tend to take your chest voice too high, causing strain and vocal abuse. Your upper register is weak and breathy compared to the lower register and there is usually a “flip” as you transition through the first bridge.

At Sing Like a Star we have just the solution for the Unbalanced Pulled Lower singer – the “top-down” exercises! We start in the upper register or head voice, otherwise known as CT-dominant phonation, and blend downward into the lower register or chest voice. The goal is to eliminate the “flip” or vocal break that occurs from pushing the chest voice too high.

Most songs are challenging because they start lower in the verse and then go higher in the chorus, which is really a problem for the Unbalanced Pulled Lower singer. This causes them to get stuck in the chest voice, and then to strain, squeeze, and flip as they attempt to sing the high notes of the chorus.

To counteract this tendency we have created very effective “top-down” exercises that reduce the tendency to “pull chest” and stay stuck in the lower register. Using a wi syllable, we start high and the blend downward. Eventually we would also work from the bottom up, starting on a low note, reinforcing the new coordination.

At Sing Like a Star, we will build a strong high voice or upper register for you with specifically designed exercises that work! Our goal is to make your head voice or upper register as strong and powerful as your chest voice or belt.
